Guys & Gals, I'm looking at buying another reel - for inshore spinning - and was looking at the Shimano 4000 size. From your experience is that too small ? All of my small reels are 2500 size and don't hold enough line. But I also want to keep them exclusively for light line float fishing. I'm not planning any gear to take on 40kg GTs, so just big enough to play in the shallows around Dubai and the creeks of Abu Dhabi/Umm Al Quwain. Help & advice please

Hi Sunny 4000 series will hold approx 200 yards of 10lb test mono, and 300+ yards of similar braid. For inshore spinning work this should be fine - when lure fishing, I use a light drag for kings as due to their feeding habits (slash feeding, tail-nipping, short-striking), they are often lightly hooked on the face and more than a few pounds of drag will frequently pop the hook. Larger (10kg+) kings will run for 100 plus yards, but then very quickly burn out and tire. But the light drag maxim holds even with the bigger fish - many anglers lose kings, especially boat-side, by trying to horse them in. The main other predators here - queens and barracuda - hammer lures, and typically take them well in the mouth, so more pressure can be applied. Barracuda will be no prob at all, queens require a bit more muscle on the drag than kings as they kite and use their depth, but tend not to run too far. Sorry, that's a long answer to a simple question So, erm, a 4000 series should be fine for inshore spinning

All my UK fishing has been heavy boat-gear ledgered bait or very light float fishing for mullet. So lure fishing is not my area of skill and on the whole not with fish that can strip 100 yards from a reel. So the adventure of lure fishing and saltwater fly are areas a that I'm really keen to try and move in to. I managed a Queenie today - sneaked off for 20 minutes - whilst the family were sunbathing on the beach. But lure fishing with a 14ft soft action freshwater float rod is not ideal

Well....
When i finally sort my letter of no objection I will be rolling out an Okuma Trio 40s - with a lure rod from Okuma to match it (work leaving present!).... filled with 20lb Spiderwire EZ braid and light mono backing. brought some knottable wire bite tipet too for those smaller lures.
I went to Dragon Mart other weekend, selling them in there, VERY good price indeed. The Rods didn't look bad either.
As for lures, a selection to chose from. not gone overboard, a few little surface poppers and some jig-heads to get me started.... Any decent shops around?
Can't wait to get out.... Any suggestions on where to start?

Welcome aboard toneson, there is Barracuda on SZ Road junction next to Safa park, mainly game fishing orientated. Also similar in dubai garden center. Also SZ road...blue water marine...http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&safe=off&um=1&ie=UTF-8&q=blue+waters+marine+dubai&fb=1&hq=blue+waters+marine&hnear=0x3e5f43496ad9c645:0xbde66e5084295162,Dubai+-+United+Arab+Emirates&cid=0,0,1908789190654661143&sa=X&ei=eOegUJjxCoy5hAfCioCwCg&ved=0CHUQ_BIwAA Dragon mart as you know, but you get the quality you pay for.....and there are a lot of brutal fishes of a life-time out there so do not compromise on equipment. Down in Jumeirah 1 is al hammour, nice shop and helpful owner/staff. Also on SZ road in times square mall is an outdoor store(HQ or something), it has a fair selection. Best of luck.

Any suggestions on where to start? Give me a ring Antony....but I would say the easiest place is DEWA Breakwater ...the name given to the seawall at the end of JBR (Dubai Marina canal). Close parking and pleanty of wall to spin from, livebait etc. It can get crowded down there at weekends.
